How to Clean and Maintain Your Ceiling Lights

Why cleaning matters

Ceiling lights gather dust, and in Indian kitchens, a film of grease too. That buildup dims the light noticeably and dulls the fixture. A regular clean keeps a room brighter without changing a single bulb.

Switch off and cool down

Always turn off the light (ideally at the switch and let bulbs cool) before cleaning. For a thorough clean involving removing covers, switch off at the mains to be safe.

Dust regularly

Wipe fixtures with a soft, dry microfibre cloth every few weeks. For high ceilings, an extendable duster saves dragging out a ladder each time.

Clean covers and shades

  • Glass covers: remove (when cool and powered off), wash in warm soapy water, dry fully, and refit.
  • Fabric shades: dust with a brush or vacuum on low.
  • Metal/plastic: wipe with a barely-damp cloth, then dry.

Deal with kitchen grease

For greasy kitchen fixtures, a little vinegar or mild degreaser on the cloth (not sprayed directly onto electrical parts) cuts through the film. Always dry thoroughly afterward.

Don’t get electrical parts wet

Never let water near sockets, wiring or the bulb holder. Clean covers separately, off the fixture, and make sure everything is bone-dry before reassembling.

Maintenance checks

  • Replace bulbs with the correct type and wattage.
  • Check the fixture is securely mounted, especially heavier ones.
  • If a light flickers, switch off and check the bulb and connections, or call an electrician.
